WHAT IS RADIONICS?

Radionics is a field of homeopathy that American Doctor Albert Abrams (1863-1924) developed in the 1910s-1920s, diagnosing various health disorders with electrically powered equipment. Abrams called his technique the Abrams Method or EMT (Electromagnetic Therapy). In his view, various health conditions were associated with numerical ‘rates’ which he diagnosed with his custom built equipment. Number rates are still used in Radionics today.

Eventually his method evolved from solely diagnosis to treatment, to bring the body back into energetic balance, a concept similar to Traditional Chinese Medicine. He also found that he could diagnose conditions remotely with a sample of blood sent to his lab.

Abrams had set the stage with the ‘Abrams Method’ but he was quite scientific and applied standard medical structure to his unorthodox technique. As the popularity of the Abrams Method spread a new innovator emerged on the scene - Ruth Drown (1892-1963). While Abrams had an unorthodox but logical scientific approach, Ruth Drown’s method was influenced by metaphysics and and occultism.

Drown made many key contributions to Radionics, one was the use of the word Radio-Therapy, which eventually evolved into term ‘Radionics’. Another advancement was the use of 9 dials numbered zero to ten a common interface still used to this day. Drown also pioneered the use of radionics rates in treatment, while Abrams used was the first to use rates, it was purely for diagnosis.

Ruth Drown also innovated the ‘stick pad’, a method of dowsing number rates with (at that time) a rubber surface. She named it after the glass stick that Abrams would use on the abdomen of his clients while diagnosing conditions. The galvanic stick pad is still used to this day (example of a Berkana Labs stickpad above).

Ruth Drown not only contributed to the mechanical advancement of Radionics but she also injected a stream of metaphysics into the field, as a student of Kaballah, she considered number rates divine numbers. This unorthodox stream of thought opened many doors including areas outside of homeopathy and introduced applying metaphysical principles into the field.

While Drown made many contributions to Radionics, her unorthodox world view and unscientific approach led to her being derided as a ‘quack’ and hoax. Also Drown’s machines were NOT powered by any electrical input. In her view the client’s own body produced vibrations that her machines could register - a view that puzzled the mainstream. She was eventually brought to trial by the American Medical Association and found guilty for medical fraud in 1966. However, followers of her work in the United Kingdom and Europe continued - while Radionics largely died in the United States, homeopaths overseas kept the practice alive.

Today Radionics remains ‘A Secret Art’ as it is primarily practiced by small groups of homeopaths and metaphysicians around the world. I high recommend the book ‘The Secret Art’ by Duncan Laurie which gives a good history of the field which I recounted briefly above. It is interesting to note that Laurie himself is an Artist by trade, and he takes a very interesting view of Radionics going back to the Stone Age.
